While vintage Asscher and emerald cut diamond engagement rings appear similar, there are a few key differences.
The Cuts
Both of these styles are step cut. This means that they both have straight facets. The key difference is that emerald cut diamond engagement rings feature a rectangular stone. Asscher cut diamonds have a square shape to them!
Emerald cut diamonds also have wider, more open tables—but Asschers have more facets. Asscher cut diamonds will also have a distinct X-shaped facet pattern. The culet on an emerald cut stone is more trough-shaped. Both cuts give the appearance of concentric squares, creating an intriguing and distinct hall-of-mirrors appearance!
The Histories
As its name suggests, the emerald cut was adapted from the process for cutting emeralds. While the emerald cut was not standardized until 1940, its history dates all the way back to the 1400s, with little variation.
The Asscher cut was first created in 1902 by Joseph Asscher and became popular during the Art Deco era of the 1920s. Asscher’s original process involved cutting a square-shaped diamond with 58 facets. Later, the Royal Asscher Company would improve the brilliance of the cut with 74 facets.
